EMDR Therapy

Learn about EMDR

  • EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a structured psychotherapy approach developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and is backed by extensive clinical research.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to go into detail about your trauma. Instead, it helps your brain reprocess difficult memories so they lose their emotional charge and stop interfering with your present life.

Trauma, whether big or small, can get “stuck” in the brain. You might know that the danger is over, but your body and emotions don’t always get the message. EMDR helps your brain complete the processing it couldn’t do at the time of the event, allowing those experiences to finally move into the past.

  • EMDR therapy is based on the idea that the brain can heal from psychological trauma much like the body heals from physical injury, if it gets the right support.

The process typically follows 8 phases:

    1. History & Assessment: We’ll explore your history, current symptoms, and identify targets (memories or experiences) for EMDR work.

    2. Preparation: You’ll learn grounding tools and calming techniques so you feel safe and resourced during sessions.

    3. Assessment: We’ll identify a specific memory to process, including the emotions, beliefs, and body sensations connected to it.

    4. Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, tapping, or sound), we’ll activate your brain’s natural healing process.

    5. Installation: We’ll strengthen positive, adaptive beliefs to replace old, limiting ones (“I’m not safe” becomes “I am safe now”).

    6. Body Scan: We’ll check for any remaining physical tension or distress.

    7. Closure: Each session ends with grounding and a return to a sense of calm.

    8. Reevaluation: At future sessions, we’ll revisit your progress and decide the next focus area.

Throughout, you are always in control. You’ll never be forced to relive anything you're not ready for, and your emotional safety is my top priority.

  • EMDR is highly effective for a wide range of emotional struggles, especially those connected to unresolved trauma. You don’t need to have experienced a single, major trauma to benefit, many people seek EMDR to address the effects of complex or developmental trauma, such as growing up in an emotionally unsafe home.

EMDR may be right for you if you’re dealing with:

    • PTSD or complex trauma

    • Childhood abuse or neglect

    • Anxiety, panic attacks, or chronic worry

    • Depression related to unresolved past events

    • Shame, guilt, or negative self-beliefs

    • Emotional triggers or overreactions

    • Low self-worth or imposter syndrome

    • Grief, loss, or painful breakups

    • Recovery from accidents, surgeries, or medical trauma

    • Sexual or relationship trauma

Even if you’re not sure what’s “wrong,” EMDR can help uncover the root causes of your symptoms and shift deep patterns that keep you stuck.

  • Many clients are curious about what it actually feels like to “do EMDR.” Everyone experiences it a little differently, but here’s what many people describe:

    • Memories might feel like they’re moving quickly, shifting, or losing intensity

    • Emotions rise and fall, like waves, often followed by a sense of relief

    • New insights or connections may suddenly become clear

    • Physical sensations in the body may come and go

    • A sense of “finishing” something emotionally that never felt resolved

After a successful reprocessing session, many clients report that a memory that once felt vivid and painful now feels distant or no longer emotionally charged. They often say, “It’s like I know it happened, but it doesn’t feel like it’s happening anymore.”

  • Here are a few common reflections from people who have experienced EMDR:

    • “I don’t get triggered by that anymore. It just doesn’t have the same grip on me.”

    • “I finally feel like what happened is in the past, not stuck in my body.”

    • “That memory used to flood me with shame, and now it feels neutral.”

    • “I’m not afraid of my emotions like I used to be.”

    • “I can respond instead of react. I feel more like myself.”

Everyone’s journey is different, and healing doesn’t happen overnight, but when EMDR works, it’s often life-changing.

  • “It’s a quick fix.”
While EMDR can bring about profound change, it’s not a magic button. It’s a structured and intentional process that unfolds in phases. Some people feel relief quickly, while others need more time to build trust and emotional safety first. The goal is not speed. It’s sustainable healing.

    “It only works for PTSD.”
EMDR is widely known for treating PTSD, but it's also effective for anxiety, grief, relationship struggles, phobias, and negative self-beliefs stemming from emotional wounds, even if they’re not “traumatic” in the traditional sense.

“It’s weird to move your eyes back and forth.”
Understandable! The eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (like tapping or tones) might feel unusual at first, but most clients get used to it quickly. And once they start feeling the emotional shifts, it often becomes a very natural part of the process.

EMDR Therapy with me.

I offer EMDR therapy to women and teens from San Bernardino, CA, and throughout California & Missouri via secure telehealth. Whether you're struggling with recent trauma or the lasting effects of early life experiences, I’ll work with you at your pace, in a supportive and nonjudgmental space.

Every EMDR journey is unique. We’ll tailor the process to fit your needs, goals, and readiness, whether you want to work on one memory or untangle a lifetime of emotional pain.

You don’t have to keep carrying the weight of the past. If you’re curious about EMDR or wondering whether it’s right for you, I offer a free 15-minute consultation. Let’s talk about what you’re facing and how I can support your healing.

  • As a trauma therapist, I approach EMDR through the lens of compassion, consent, and collaboration. I won’t push you to talk about anything you’re not ready for, and we’ll always go at a pace that respects your nervous system.

I work especially with people healing from complex trauma and attachment wounds—those long-standing patterns of fear, shame, or emotional disconnection that often come from childhood experiences. EMDR is a powerful tool for this kind of healing because it allows us to go beyond talk therapy and reach the root of those patterns.

Before we begin reprocessing, we’ll spend time building emotional safety and connection. That might include:

    • Learning how to ground and soothe your nervous system

    • Identifying emotional triggers and building awareness

    • Strengthening your inner resources (e.g., calm place visualization, self-compassion)

    • Creating a plan that aligns with your specific goals and pace.

  • Free Consultation Call
We’ll begin with a 15-minute phone call to get to know each other, talk briefly about what’s bringing you to therapy, and see if EMDR might be a good fit.

    Initial Sessions
In our first few sessions, we’ll explore your history, clarify goals, and begin building the emotional tools and safety needed for EMDR work.

    The EMDR Process
When you feel ready, we’ll begin reprocessing specific memories or patterns using EMDR. This part of therapy unfolds differently for everyone, but I’ll be with you every step of the way.

    Ongoing Integration
As old pain releases and new insights emerge, we’ll work together to integrate what you’ve discovered. That means supporting real-life changes, like boundary-setting, improved relationships, and a deeper connection to yourself.

  • If you’ve been living with the weight of past experiences, you might wonder if things can really change. EMDR doesn’t erase the past, but it can change the way the past lives in you. It can help you move from survival to peace, from reactivity to resilience, and from shame to self-worth.

You don’t have to carry it alone. Healing is possible, and you are worthy of it.
